FAQ

  • Do you take drop-ins?
No. Drop-in appointments will not be accepted under any circumstances. As this is a home-based practice, we ask that you do not visit any time other than a scheduled appointment. Bookings can be made online or via email.
  • Are you a registered massage therapist? What's the difference between an RMT and other kinds of massage?
Yes. All massage appointments made at Trailhead are with a Registered Massage Therapist in good standing with the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC). RMTs need to meet strict requirements for education and ethical conduct. Other people providing massage are not regulated in any way in terms of knowledge, experience, training, or conduct. Additionally, they are not generally able to bill to extended benefits/3rd party insurance.
  • Can massage therapy help me?
That is a very complex question that does not have a single answer. Massage therapy has a great deal of benefits that can help many people. If you have a specific issue you'd like help with, please feel free to contact us. We would be happy to chat about how we might be able to help. Even if it's something beyond our scope, we may be able to point you in the right direction.
  • Do I need a referral for massage therapy?
No referral or doctor's note is required to make an appointment. Depending on your insurance provider, you may need to see a medical doctor for a note to give to your insurance provider for coverage.
  • It is my first appointment - what do I need to know?
Welcome! A first appointment can be daunting for some, so please read the following and feel free to ask any additional questions not already answered: -We require some basic patient information. Please ensure your intake form is complete before arriving for your appointment -Your massage therapy appointment time includes the following: interview/assessment, hands-on treatment time, and some time at the end for reassessment/advice for stretching or strengthening exercises. -You can undress to your level of comfort. Skin-to-skin is typical to allow the use for oil and other techniques, but we are able to work around your level of comfort - whatever that might be. -You will be covered by a sheet and a blanket, only revealing the areas that are being worked on by the therapist. -The therapist will check in with you with regards to pressure. Please feel free to speak up if it's too much pressure (or too little). -If at any time you feel uncomfortable, please inform the therapist. They will do their best to ensure a safe and comfortable treatment environment.
  • How long are your massage therapy appointments?
Appointments are currently limited to 60 minutes in duration. Longer or shorter appointments may be made available to accommodate individuals with specific medical requirements at the discretion of the therapist.
  • How early should I arrive?
Please try to show up 5 minutes before your appointment time. Arriving too early may be disruptive to others. If it is your first appointment, please ensure your intake form has been filled out and submitted before your arrival.
  • I have another question not answered here...
Please feel free to get in touch with us directly regarding any additional questions. We're happy to try to answer whatever questions you might have!
  • What sort of business is Trailhead Massage Therapy?
Trailhead Massage Therapy is a home-based practice. As such, we ask that you do not visit outside of your scheduled appointment times. Drops-ins are not available.
  • Where should I enter? Where should I park?
You can park immediately beside the house. There will be signage to provide guidance. There is a sliding glass door used as a patient entrance. If the door is locked, please wait for the therapist to let you in. Please do not use any other doors. If you arrive early and another vehicle is already parked beside the house, please do not block them in.
  • I have allergies - can I still come?
Yes. We strive to keep the area as scent-free as possible. Since it is a home-based business, there may be some food smells around mealtimes. Additionally, there are two cats in the house, but they are kept away from patient areas during work hours. However, the treatment room is kept clean and clear of allergens, and the air is cleaned with a HEPA filtration device. Oil used during treatment is Apricot Kernel Oil. If this may pose a risk for allergies, alternatives may be available. If you have any other specific concerns or severe allergies triggered by smell, please contact us. We are happy to make special arrangements to accommodate your needs.
  • Do you have a cancellation policy?
Yes. If you need to cancel an appointment, please give a minimum of 24 hours notice in advance. Otherwise, you will be liable to pay the cost of the treatment. Please note that this will not be covered by any extended benefits or 3rd party insurance. If it is unsafe for you to make it to your appointment due to illness or other extenuating circumstances, please let us know as soon as possible. We do our best to operate with compassion, but we are less likely to be understanding when no notice is given at all.
  • Is the interview/assessment time included in my appointment time?
Yes. Patient interview and assessment are important parts of your appointment time that help inform the therapist's approach to treatment. They are using their education and expertise during this time, and will likely relay valuable information to you. While this may not be the "hands-on" portion of the appointment, it is an important part of your treatment.
  • What if I don't want the assessment? I just want as much treatment time as possible.
A very important part of Registered Massage Therapy treatments is the interview/assessment portion. Just as you wouldn't go for surgery without a plan or get a tooth pulled without a reason, massage therapy relies on assessment to be able to give treatment in a safe and effective manner. Often, a couple minutes of chat about what's going on and how you're feeling can help the RMT get to the heart of the matter immediately and come up with a full treatment to help with the bigger picture. RMTs are trained and well-practiced at assessing effectively, and won't spend time on assessment techniques unless it directly informs their approach to treatment. Subsequent treatments often involve less interview/assessment time than initial appointments because your background and a baseline has already been established. If you still believe you do not want any interview/assessment time, perhaps a different massage practitioner might be a better fit.

  • Will I receive a receipt for my treatments?
